"Good afternoon, my name is Tom Brintzenhofe, certified master tech out of Reading, Pennsylvania. Today I am going to show you a little bit of how to remove rust from hubcaps. Removing rust from hubcaps is the same as removing rust from rims. Either way, it really does not matter. The only thing that you really need to use, and the safest thing to use, is a penetrating oil. If you cannot get it off with penetrating oil and a rag, some soft steel wool works pretty good. It is going to take a little elbow grease, but the safest thing you can use, because a lot of the newer rims, even some of the hubcaps have a clear coating on them that keeps them from corroding, and as they get chipped off they start to rust. But keep in mind, if you use anything that is acidic, it will take the clear coat off any rim. So you want to be careful as to what you use. Liquid Wrench makes a good penetrating oil. I think there is five-in-one or ten-in-one lubricating oils out there. But the best thing, I said, is penetrating oil. You want to spray this on the rim a little bit. And, if you can, you might have to coat it a few times, let it sit for a half hour, forty-five minutes if you can. Come back over it again. The longer it sits, the easier it is going to be for you to take it off. But after it sits for awhile, you just want to go back over it, just basically rub it back and forth. It might take you awhile. You are going to see little pits and stuff in there. As you start to see the darkness out of the little pits coming out, that is the rust coming up. And once that is off, you are all done. Just try and make sure when you are spraying that the penetrating oil, that you do not get it up on your brake. That is not a good thing when you come to stop when you are done. But that is about all there is to it. A little elbow grease, a little penetrating oil. If it is stubborn, you are going to need a little steel wool, but just be careful not to scratch too hard. That is all there is to it, removing rust from rims or hubcaps."
