"Good afternoon, my name's Tom Brintzenhofe. A certified master mechanic out of Reading, PA. Today I'm going to talk a little bit about battery tester reviews. Make this as simple as I possibly can. When you're testing a battery you don't need any fancy equipment. It helps to have a little buddy with you but I'm going to show you a real simple way of using just a basic multi-meter and a buddy to give you a hand. When you hook this up you have negative and your positive terminal. Red's always positive. Negative's always black. Once you hook these two up with the key off, this should always be 12.5. That's a fully charged battery. Now the easiest way to tell if your battery is either weak, or basically shot in essence is you have your buddy reach in there, keep your hands out of the engine compartment and crank this thing over. When you're cranking it your meter shouldn't drop below 10.5. If it's above 10.5 your battery's doing fine. I wouldn't worry about replacing it. Now just sitting still with the key off, doors all shut, and we have the doors open on this one so it's a little lower, but it should be 12.5, 12.4 at the least. And that basically gives you the charge rate of your battery. If it's anything below 12.4 I would definitely hook a battery charger up to it and charge it for a while and then re-test it a little bit later. But just keep in mind with your multi-meter, have your buddy turn your engine over and while he's turning it over and it starts it shouldn't drop below 12.5. That's the simplest way I can tell you in getting something to check your battery. You don't really need anything specific. Nothing high dollar. A regular $3.00 multi-meter will work for you. But I don't worry too much about different kinds of battery equipment. In my opinion the best review I can ever give is just a little multi-meter like this and get the job done every time."
