"Hi I'm Dr. Joshua Vogel with Carolina Ob-Gyn, a division of Wilmington Health Associates and I'm going to talk to you now about how to know when you are in menopause. There is actually a very strict definition to follow which is that after you have gone 12 months without a period you are in menopause. Now this definition should be applied to women at the appropriate age. If you are younger than you think should be occurring for menopause, age 30, 35, if you have not yet reached 40 and you have been 12 months without a period, it may well be something else and definitely deserves a visit to your doctor. But if you're in your 40's, especially older 40's or early 50's and especially if you are having hot flashes and have been 12 months without a period, then you are in menopause. Occasionally after being completely in menopause women will sometimes have a recurrence of a spontaneous menstrual cycle. This does not happen very often, but it can occur from time to time, a simple visit and discussion with your doctor should determine that it was nothing more than that. This has been a discussion of how to know when you are in menopause."
