Erm, actually the Fedora goes back to the late 19th C. (1890s). It was named after the popular Play and then Opera of the time. In terms of color, they didn't always match the men's suits, nor were they required to. One of my personal favorites is a pale gray Fedora with a dark band, worn with a navy blue or darker gray suit. Also, it should be pointed out that there's a physical difference between a Fedora and a Trilby. Fedoras have a slight taper to the crown, Trilby's have no taper; they're straight sided.
