"Christopher Columbus sighted Antigua on his second voyage to the New World in the year 1493. He chose to name the glorious island Sante Maria de la Antigua, after a miracle working saint in the Seville cathedral. The British, however, mispronounced the name as "Antigua", and so it has been called ever since. Believe it or not, Antigua is a relatively young state, and only won it's independence in 1981, on November 1st, which is now know as their Independence Day. It still has strong ties to British tradition, and English is it's official language. You'll notice old English charm and culture is almost everywhere you look. If you were to spend a year on this beautiful island, you could actually visit a different beach every day of the year, as Antigua hosts three hundred and sixty five different beaches. Check out the great shopping, restaurants, and brand resorts. The currency of the island is the eastern Caribbean dollar, also known as the "biwee". Don't panic if you don't have a biwee in your wallet. They also accept the U.S. dollar."
