"Do you like to shop? I probably spend a little bit too much time at the mall. Have you ever wondered you can deduct your clothing for work on your tax return? I'm Kristen Brand and I'm here to talk to you about how you can deduct your work clothing on your tax return. Now this isn't as simple as it seems. You can't write off your new pair of heels or that shirt you just had to have off of the mannequin unless it's something that's not really suitable to wear anywhere else. That's the tough part. If you have a job that requires a uniform that you probably couldn't wear out to a dinner party or even to the grocery store, then those kinds of things are deductible. Also, if it's something that you have to have for a safety issue, a hard hat or safety glasses, that kind of thing is deductible as well. If it's simply something that you have to wear to work but you could get away with something else, its probably not going to cut it. For instance, if you're a painter and you got to wear overalls, well, you can get away with that while you're shopping for food at public too so that's really not going to work. One thing that is fun and I've seen, is whenever you are in the entertainment business. I do have a client that's a wrestler and I get to see all kinds of tights and underwear and different kinds of capes that he wears, and those kinds of things are deductible because they're not suitable for regular street wear. I'm Kristen Brand and that is how you can deduct things you wear to work on your tax return."
