"How to get rid of fleas without using commercial chemicals. Well, there are ways that you can help combat fleas, without going out and purchasing commercial pesticides, and the like, but they're not going to be nearly as effective, and frankly personally, I think they're more time consuming, and more difficult to use, than just buying the commercial pesticides, but some people prefer it that way, so these are a couple of different things you can do. You can chop up six or eight lemons, and steep them in a hot water overnight, and then let it cool, and just like a tea, pour it into a spray bottle, and then you can take this spray bottle, and you can spritz your animal's fur with it, and rub it in a bit. Make sure you're not going to get it in the eyes, or the face, and that will help keep fleas away. They don't like the smell or taste of lemon. You can also take cedar bedding, and this can be spread around in their bedding area, or you could probably boil this, just like your lemon into a tea, and spritz the animal with it as well. They're not going to like that cedar smell. It's not something that fleas really go for. Another thing to do, to help on your carpeting, you can make a mixture of four parts borax, which you can buy at any hardware store, to one part salt. You take this mixture, and you're going to spread it on your carpeting, and mix it into the fibers nice and good. Let it sit for a day, and then vacuum it back up, and what this will do, is it will help dehydrate any flea eggs, or flea pupa that are in the carpeting, in the carpet fibers, and help kill those for you, and it's a lot cheaper and a lot easier to do, than flea bombing. In extreme cases, you can take essential oils of lavender, and tea tree, and you can use those in very, very small amounts, like a couple of drops of either one, to help in a bath, for the animal, and then bathe the animal in that. Again, just a couple of drops of tea tree oil, or the lavender oil. Never apply this directly to the animal. Always dilute it in a large body of water, because these can be potentially volatile, and harmful chemicals to the dog, or a cat. Again, I have to stress, in any of these kind of homemade kind of remedies, to be very, very careful with them, because they're not proven. They're not tested, they're not being made in laboratories. These are things people have done on their own, over time, and found to work, so individual reactions, with the different products and different oils, things like that, can be very, very painful and detrimental to your animal, so definitely be careful about doing this, and I do stress trying the commercial pesticides first."
