"My name is Christine Marquette, and I'm a registered dietitian with the Austin Regional Clinic, and I'm going to talk to you about the grapefruit cleansing diet. This particular diet is another fad diet that has been around for a number of years. The basic premise is that you're primarily eating grapefruit. You're avoiding a lot of other food groups. And it is a seven day diet. Each day is a little bit different. It always includes grapefruit, but again, very limited other choices. So for example, day one a breakfast would include eggs, half a grapefruit, either coffee, tea or water to drink. Your next meal would include again grapefruit, no meat, vegetables. Dinner would include a very small portion of meat, again the grapefruit, and a very non-starchy type vegetable such as broccoli. Again, your drinks would only be tea, coffee, or water. So this diet again is a fad diet. It isn't very nutritionally sound because your options are so limited and the portion sizes are are very small, so this particular diet is not recommended. You can lose a lot of weight, but again, it's not a healthy way to lose weight because you will be lacking in a lot of different vitamins and minerals, and as well as other nutrients; fiber for example, some of the healthy fats you won't be able to get if you follow this diet. So, the grapefruit cleansing diet is another fad diet that's primarily extremely low calorie and very low in other nutrients, so is generally not recommended for healthy weight loss."
