So you've got a new notebook computer, it's got a wireless card or adaptor in it, and you want to be able to use it safely on a public wifi network. I'm Chris Cook with Security Awarenes Incorporated. Let's talk a little bit about safe secure wifi usage. If you're going to use a public wifi network, there are a couple of precautions you want to make with your computer. First of all, if they're offering encryption and have an encryption key available such as web or WPA, you want to go ahead and use that. That's going to help protect your information and not send it as plain text code across the internet or just a straight binary code, across the internet. Or at least between your computer and their router. Second, if they don't, and you're just using a standard wide open connection to their router, then you want to make sure that your computer does not have sharing enabled on it, and you also want to make sure that you're not sending any sensitive or critical information across their connection, because a lot of the times this can be intercepted, and it can be recorded, it can be retransmitted, and it's not going to make for secure information. So, make sure you're using a secure connection, make sure you don't have your computer open for sharing, and don't send sensitive or critical information.
