"Today we're going to be talking about how to keep that love alive and strong. And how to avoid a relationship breakdown. Hi I'm Joe Cuenco, I'm with Family Resources. Well just how do you avoid a relationship breakdown? Well the real key is that all relationships are going to have issues. You really just want to minimize these tests that you're going to have over time. Most people wouldn't dream of their driving their automobile for fifty-thousand miles or so without getting a tune up. But I tell you that most people never really think about getting a relationship tune up. And that's what workshops such as what Family Resources or marriage education classes are all about. Understanding the dynamics of relationships and how they work together and how to improve those fundamentals. Realistically, in order to avoid a relationship breakdown, you really need to begin to communicate and understand what's happening. If you're having difficulties, I would suggest putting on a piece of paper what your strengths and weaknesses are, and numbering them from one to ten on the areas that you need to work on. The experts will tell you to focus on your strengths, build from there, and when it comes to some of the weaknesses or areas of improvement, put together an action plan on how you're going to come together as a couple. For example, it may be that the husband is not balancing the checkbook, causing some checks to bounce, the wife may be spending more on credit cards than they really should, or perhaps, he's spending too much time on the golf course. Realistically, when relationships begin to have breakdowns, some of the solutions are really not all that complex. It really is a matter of getting together, working through some of things that are either putting a wedge between you or causing difficulty in a relationship. And attitude is a real key. You really have to want to work to address the fundamental problems. It always involves negotiation and compromise. And giving of yourself. Because the goal is to really achieve detente, you want peace in the household, it's much better at the end of the day that you avoid relationship breakdowns, focus on how to strengthen the relationship, and move forward that way. And that's how to build a happier life. I'm Joe Cuenco with Family Resources, relationships for life."
