"I'm Coach Rudy here and I have won championships both as a coach and a player. Let's talk about the hook shot. It is a really old school shot. It is not used that much any more but if you learn how to do it it is a very good tool against a defender that is taller than you are. So play with your back to the basket and you are understanding that you are going to try to get the shot off with your body in between you and the defender. Turn your body sideways and let the ball come down your arm and establish the position of having the ball come over your head and shoulders towards the basket. It is away from the defender and if you practice it you can get really good at it. Typical scenarios are if you are established in the paint and your defender is pushing you out one of the ways that you can separate is by having a good hook shot. You re-establish and go to the other side, the ball reverses and comes to you and you take a couple of steps, you get the ball and dribble, take a couple of steps, you turn your body to the side and let the ball come down your arm and you release the ball over your head and shoulders towards th basket. Old school but very very effective, the hook shot, practice it and learn it especially you young guys."
