"I'm Katie Adams, a registered dietitian with Decathlon Club part of Western Athletic Clubs. We're going to talk about how to increase your metabolism. To keep the metabolism functioning at its highest rate, practice food frequency. That is eating every three to four hours. When we go too long without eating, our body thinks that it is being starved. It goes into an energy saving mode, much like a computer and it burns calories very slowly. When the body does get food again, it holds onto it for as long as possible in the form of fat. To retrain the body to learn that is OK to burn calories, practice eating every three to four hours. This doesn't have to be a large meal, a small, three small meals and two or three small snacks a day are all that are needed. Some examples of snacks might be a small apple with a tablespoon of peanut butter, a couple cups of air popped popcorn or some low-fat cheese with whole grain crackers.
