Basketball Pick & Roll: Setting the Offense

"Hi this is Sean Hobson and we are talking about setting up a screen and roll offense. The way that we want to set this up is like every other offense. We want to keep things consistent so we are going to start all of our offenses out of a 1- 4 low set. So you've got your 2, your small forward and your guards on the outside. You have your two post players which are going to be the two guys that are going to run the pick and roll offense and then of course your point guard is going to be bringing the ball up at the top of the key. The reason that we start in the 1 - 4 low offense is simply for the reason of that if we want to pass to the guards out of our side screening rolls, we want these guys to be down where the defenders are here and then as they run up, go ahead, as they run up the defender is chasing behind them and they are coming to the ball when we make a pass to the wing. Also if it is a high screen and roll we really don't want the outside wings to be involved in the play until after the screen and roll happens and then the wings are going to pop up and become involved. So what we are doing right now is we are getting these guys out of the way so that we can isolate this entire top portion of the offense for the screen and roll. That is going to set us up for some good work here at the top where there are not so many defenders."
