"Hi I'm Ty Brown with dogbehavioronline.com. I'm here in Riverton, Utah teaching you how to train a dog. The concept of today's training is teaching you how to leash-train a dog. Now the way that I like to leash-train a dog is by using, what I call, my crazy man method. What that means is I'm going to tell the dog "Come on" and when he starts to go ahead like a lot of dogs do, I'm going to change my direction. Give it a little tug. And repeat the words "Come on" and start going in a new direction. If he goes too far to my left, I'm going to go to the right. If he goes too far to my right, I'm going to tug him back to the left. So every direction he goes I'm going to change directions, give a little tug, and start going the new direction. Now what goes on in the dog's head is that "Boy, I go this way, that guy goes that way, I go left, he goes right, I'd better watch out for this guy. He's crazy." And so once the dog starts to realize this, he realizes I need to pay attention to my owner. And so what this will do, is this will fix the dog that likes to pull on a leash. Most of my clients complain that their dogs pull on the leash, and using this crazy man method is what teaches the dog that he needs to pay attention to you when you're walking, instead of paying attention to every cat, bird, squirrel, and everything else that's going on in the world. And so use this method and you'll have success teaching your dog to walk calmly by your left hand side."
