So the major 3rd is basically an interval that comes after the minor 3rd in terms of its expansion, the distance between two notes is getting greater here. Remember a minor 3rd is 1 half, sorry. A minor 2nd is 1 half step, a major 2nd is 2 half steps, a minor 3rd is 3 half steps, a major 3rd is 4 half steps. So you can think of this as being either 2 whole steps or 4 half steps, whatever's easier. 2 whole step may be easier to, to understand. So to do this construction on the guitar we an basically take a starting note like C the 3rd fret on the A string and wither use our half step formula going up in half steps 1 2 3 4 or we can use our whole step formula which is the equivalent 2 half steps, I mean 2 whole steps here so 1 whole steps, 2 whole steps gets us to the same place just a little bit faster.
