"You begin your crocheting with a slip knot just the way you would with beginning to get your knit stitches. So for starters, you're going to wrap your yarn around your fingers, bring the yarn up through the back, hold that loop and you've got a slip knot. You really don't need a big tail, anywhere from four to six inches is good. You want to get that stitch snug against the shank of the needle. That keeps you from getting your stitches too tight, and then what you're going to do, I like to hold the slip knot with my thumb and middle finger. You're going to wrap the yarn over the hook, over the top of the hook and pull it through. These are the chain stitches that make up the foundation chain. Yarn goes back over the hook from back to front and you'll make as many chain stitches as you need. And you want to run them against the shank so you'll keep your stitches from getting too tight. And then keep going until you have your desired number of stitches. And that's what the foundation chain will look like. You've got the top which has these, and the bottom which has a little bump."
