Summary: Wood frogs require care like other popular pet frogs. They enjoy water and live insects in terrariums. Raise healthy pet wood frogs with tips from a herpetologist in this free video on frog care.
"Hi, my name is Tim Cole. I'm with the Austin Reptile Service, and I've been keeping reptiles and amphibians for over forty years. And we're here to talk about wood frogs. Wood frogs are a frog that lives in the northeastern part of the U.S., basically from Wisconsin all the way up into the northeast and Canada. These are kind of a brownish frog with a black mask going across the eyes. And a medium size frog, about four or five inches long. And these were one of the first frogs that were documented to have a chemical in their system similar to antifreeze, where these frogs would actually become frozen in hibernation, and then when they came out of hibernation and were warmed up, basically came back to life and survived being frozen. They're an interesting-looking frog that, of course, like most frogs, feeds on insects. They might be protected in various states they live in, so you would want to check on that before you keep one for a pet. But their care would be pretty much the same as other frogs, where they live on land, they need water to get into, they'll feed on live insects. And I would keep them a little bit cooler, they're not going to like high temperatures. So keeping them in the low seventies would be good."
