"The way I got my job I started off as a police officer in California and before I became a police officer I decided that one of the best things for me to do would be to go get my degree so I got a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration. Really it had nothing to do with State Parks but that was something that I felt very strongly about getting so when I was a police officer in California I realized that being there in California and the money I was making there, I wasn't going to be able to own a house in the area that I worked. So I decided to move to Utah and when I came to Utah I applied to some different agencies out here and I ran into a friend of mine that was a park ranger. He told me about the job and I thought, boy that's kind of the job for me so I applied with the agency when we had, when it was a hiring time, and I went through, we had to go through a few interviews. We had to take a physical agility test. One of the things we had to was jump into a pool of water and swim 50 yards with our clothes on so that's not typical for a regular law enforcement agency. So you do need to have some swimming skills obviously, you are going to be on boats and you could end up in the water so you need to have some of those swimming skills and then the first job that I got assigned to I actually got assigned to work at Lake Powell and I absolutely loved it out on Lake Powell. I was there for a year and I did probably 90% of my time was probably out on the boat, out on the lake somewhere doing law enforcement and that was a great time of my career, I enjoyed it very much. I had a family at the time and we decided that we would go up to Salt Lake and I transferred to a different park here in the Salt Lake area and then a couple of years later I got a promotion to be an Assistant Park Manager where I am at right now at The Great Salt Lake Marina State Park and that's kind of my history with state parks and for me it has been very enjoyable and I love my time as a state park ranger and in the state park system."
