"In the winter months, I like to let my car run for about five minutes. This way I can have the rear window defroster on, check the back glass to make sure it's clear, let the car get a little heat in the motor oil, and the transmission fluid, and the coolant system before I drive off. Also, I could check, makes sure that my alternator output is where it's supposed to be and I'll be able to check my gauges, see where I stand for a safe trip. You could check your heater to make sure it's blowing, your defroster to make sure it's working, and if they're in operable condition, you should be about good to go. While sitting in the car, letting it warm up, garage door down, I could check my wipers, make sure all the speeds are working, I could check my horn, and I could check my turn signals. On your dash, you have your green arrows, if you notice the speed has changed and they're flashing, that could be a signal that you have a problem. It could be a burnt bulb, the flasher going, it's just a quick way to let you know something could possibly be wrong."
