"My first job came once I finished vet school, I actually did about twelve interviews. I interviewed up in North Florida where I am from, I interviewed down through South Florida as well as parts of Georgia. One of the most important things that I was looking for is all of these the quality of medicine practiced at the clinic as well as a large case load so I would actually set up interviews such that I could spend time at each clinic and get an idea of what type of cases they were seeing and also see how the doctors practiced and I was most impressed with the clinic in South Florida and Knolls animal clinics when I got out of school and so I took the job with them. I actually did a couple of working interviews with Knolls when I came down and I was offered the job and because of the quality of medicine that was practiced I opted to take this position and it was very rewarding. I had a very large case load. I did a lot of emergency work as well as general practice work as well as seeing emergencies after midnight. Those were some of the more challenging cases because you are dealing with a reduced staff and you also are primarily on your own and that was also a very good part of the practice because it forces you to use the tools that you have acquired in vet school from day to day as well as during the period of time that you worked as a technician and the things that you would glean from that experience. Another way to prepare for a career in veterinary medicine is to go into the clinic and volunteer and make sure that this is the job that you want to do even though I always wanted to be a veterinarian in the first week or two in veterinary medicine, just as a voluntary technician I started to question it because of the different smells which would give you a feeling of nausea and so that was the first time I ever thought maybe I won't be able to do this."
