"Veterinarians generally start, currently, at about $60,000 a year. I think is the median salary for veterinarians across the country. In addition to that now - something that was not available when I started practicing - most veterinarians, or most veterinary clinics, start their new associates out with the base salary as well as commission meaning that they actually get a percentage, and I think 20% is about the average, on production. Back in the early 90's I think that the starting salary was around $33,000 a year. The veterinarian who is capable of doing medicine and surgery has a much greater earning potential because they will hospitalize cases and work up diabetics, kidney disease animals, animals with heart disease, etc, and keep the animal in the clinic for several days to get them regulated. Veterinarians who are capable of doing surgery, not just the routine procedures if you will, the spays and neuters and dental cleanings etc, also can increase their earning potential by that mechanism, and then you also have people who do orthopedic surgery as well as soft tissue surgery. These procedures greatly increase the ability for a veterinarian to earn more money. The veterinarian field is growing, I think, rapidly. We have a number of vet schools in the United States, and have a number of veterinary students. The average for most schools is probably 80 students per class. Some go as high as 120 per class, and if you look around as your driving there are a number of veterinary clinics in various areas and they're all within 2-3 blocks of each other, and sometimes much closer. So it's a very large field and there is a number of individuals who have pets and they care very deeply for the pets and most get great care."
