"Hi I'm Nancy Frensley. I'm the training manager at the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society here in Berkeley, California. We are going to talk today about how to care for a Greyhound. You know the Greyhounds have such a checkered career in our society. So many of the Greyhounds that become pets have been Greyhounds that were rescued from the track or adopted after their running careers in Greyhound racing were over so Greyhounds can really really be great pets. They're big and unless they are running they are a big slow moving dog. Most of them are very happy just to be next to their people. They have practically no undercoat at all so your Greyhounds are going to always need a jacket in cold weather or a nice sweater. Greyhounds don't sit very well so when you are doing obedience training it is a lot easier to teach them to do a down instead of a sit because of their big old hind ends, their big haunches are so big that when they sit their bottoms can't hit the ground. Your Greyhound should be a very very easy care dog. You do have to watch out for predatory drive. They will go after cats and they will go after other dogs but they can be easily taught to simply stay by you instead of doing that."
