"Hi, I'm Kelli. I'm an aesthetician and makeup artist at Ulta Salon and Cosmetics, and I'm going to talk to you a little bit about fading acne scars. Basically, what causes acne scars is when you have a blemish, and you pick it and it causes scabbing, and you go out into the sun. The sun is going to discolor that blemish. So, one way that you can get rid of acne scars is using a lightening gel. This is by Murad, it's a post-acne lightening gel. It's two percent hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is an ingredient that actually helps to inhibit pigmentation from forming, 'cause basically what happens within that cell is your cell produces too much melanin, which can cause too hyper-pigmentation or discoloration. And when you are picking a blemish off of the skin, you're basically exposing new baby skin to the sunlight. And therefore, when it's exposed to the sun if you don't have a sunscreen on, that causes discoloration. So this is a product you can use twice a day, and you would just take a little bit. And you can just apply it to anywhere that you're concerned. Shirley doesn't have any scarring, but just to demonstrate. You could just kind of pat it on that area. Let it soak in. And follow up with a moisturizer and a sunscreen. If you're using a lightening product with hydroquinone, you want to definitely make sure that you follow up with a sunscreen, because you want to protect that pigment from producing. So, you can definitely lighten acne scars by using a lightening gel."

on 12/11/2008 Hyperpigmentation is NOT a scar. There are two types of acne scars, raised (resulting from increase cellular bridging or keloiding) and depressed (resulting from a callopse cellular tissue around the follicle (pore).
Scars can be reduced by skincare treatments combining acids and Microdermabrasion or medically through lasers.
