"What are the signs of periodontal or gum disease? Hi I'm Dr. David Wagner and I'm going to tell you some of the common signs of gum disease. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a infection of the gums surrounding the teeth and can lead to the loss of your teeth. The common signs of gum disease have to do with bleeding around the gums, swelling in the gums, discoloration or redness in the gums and also, a foul odor. This comes from the buildup of food particles and bacteria creating acids or toxins underneath your gums which leads to all the disease processes that can go on. It's very important to prevent this. The only way you can find out what your level or degree of the gum disease is is to see your dentist. Watch for the telltale signs of gum disease while brushing and flossing and make a regular checkup with your dentist so you have a healthy, happy smile. I'm Dr. David Wagner, Northwood Dental, Clearwater, Florida."
