"Training a dog not to jump on you can be a real hassle, if you have a lot of people in the household that are petting the dog when they do just that. A few things that don't work would be to push the dog back, or to try to force the dog into a sit. What you want it to be is a behavior he selects on his own, and what I'll do many times is wait for the sit to happen. So if I have a dog to jump on me, I'm not going to look at him, I'm not going to pet him, or have any interaction; a nice chin up, so that you're not looking down at him. Soon as the dog has all four on the ground, reach down; reward the dog. Doesn't have to necessarily be a treat, but you can pet him at that time. What will happen is the dog will go through many of the behaviors that had paid off for him in the past, and as soon as your select that one you like, it will start to appear faster and more frequently, and then before you know it you have a dog that sits no matter what may be going on. It will be his default behavior."
