This is financial advisor, Patrick Munro, talking about what is a cash bail bond? The world of bail bonding has really grown, especially during this tough economy. It's a direct function of the way crime is occurring out there in the marketplace. Essentially, a bail bondsman will put up a bond if the individual is not a flight risk, or is considered to be in a difficult situation from that perspective. If the judge believes that the individual is a definite flight risk, but is still willing to allow them to be let out of jail, then of course, they would put up what's called a 'cash bail bond', and that is essentially cash. Many times the families are unable to raise that cash, and as a result, the individual remains incarcerated. But, if they do have cash available, such as in the case most recently of Bernie Madoff from New York City, the ponzi scheme artist, then of course, the cash is immediately posted and he's let out of jail.
