"Hello, my name is Dr. James Dee. I'm with Hollywood Animal Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. Veterinary technicians are an integral part of the veterinarians practice, and there's a lot of opportunities for these people both in the care of the pet and further in some cases going into pharmaceutical sales. Normally, an individual must have an associates degree in order to be accepted into a veterinary technician school. The school then usually is approximately three years. There are several certified veterinary technician schools out there. There are also schools that are not certified, and once you graduate, you have a degree, but you are not able to get a certified veterinary technician license. So one has to do their homework with the school before they ever apply and spend their time and energy and money in going to a three year program. Now, the qualifications besides an associates degree are obviously a love of animals, not being afraid of being able to see blood or seeing animals that are injured because that's part of the job as well as the healthy. It gets to be very gratifying for the technician to be able to place a catheter, give fluids, take the radiographs, assist the doctor and send home a healthy pet."

The only requirements for enrollment in a veterinary technology program are a high school diploma or GED. The student then completes a 2-year associates degree program in veterinary technology. Earning this degree may take longer if a student wants to take fewer courses in a semester. A student may also continue their education and earn a bachelors degree in veterinary technology at 1 of 20 different schools offering this degree program around the US.
