"Hello I'm Dr. David Cathcart. I'm a family practice physician from Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph and we are going to talk about chemotherapy drugs and their side effects today. Chemotherapy for colon cancer is much like any other type of chemotherapy with respect to its side effects. The common drugs used for colon cancer chemotherapy and certainly not the only ones are Fluorouracil and another medication called Leukavoren and the Leukavoren seems to help the Fluorouracil work a little better. Fluorouracil is what is referred to as an antimetabolite drug. It interferes with the replication of DNA and RNA as that cell divides so because these medications effect cell division because it is the cancer cells that are growing rapidly and it interferes with that. It also interferes with healthy cells that are dividing rapidly so the side effects are basically limited or include those organ systems that have cells that are dividing rapidly. For example, the bone marrow which is where our cells come from for our blood cells and our immune system cells, our hair cells, the cells that involve the gastrointestinal tract, starting from the mouth, the stomach, the colon and everywhere in between and so you can have side effects associated with nausea, with vomiting, with stomach cramping, gas and diarrhea. It also effects the cells of the mucosa inside the mouth and also inside the vagina for women and so in those areas you can have sores that develop so colon cancer chemotherapeutic side effects are just like any other chemotherapy side effects for the most part the side effects are based on the organ systems whose cells are rapidly dividing like it is for most cancers. This is Dr. Cathcart talking about the side effects of colon cancer chemotherapy agents."
