"Hi, this is Bill Scher from liberaloasis.com. What is the purpose of a federal income tax? Well, taxes are essential to having a functioning government that provides for the national defense, it provides services to all, all its' citizens, and the income tax is the most fair way to make sure that the citizens fund their government on the basis of who has the greatest ability to fund government without undercutting their quality of life and providing for their families. Their proponents of a flat tax that would have a single standard of income tax across all income levels, but that would put a disproportionate burden on poorer families that need a larger percentage of their income just to make ends meet. And, that's why we have always had a progressive income tax that made sure wealthier families pay a larger percentage of their income, because they can do so comfortably. If we did not have that sort of taxation, we would be, our government would be reliant on the very few, if you go back to the days of monarchs, those governments were funded by pillaging, other nations, and by the money bags of the royal families themselves that did not provide for a very democratic government. When we have taxation with representation, we fund the government that we control and that has proven to be a very successful model for governments."
