"Hi my name is John Bosworth, I'm a licensed mental health counselor in St. Petersburg Florida. I want to talk about signs of schizophrenia in children with ADHD. First of all a little background on schizophrenia, most people and most children before the age of five we rarely ever see a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Most of the time what we see people develop signs and symptoms of psychosis, which are prevalent schizophrenia. We see that usually in late adolescence or people in their early twenties. Most of the people that I have worked with in that population report that their first major hospitalization or psychotic break was probably in their late teens or their early twenties. Most in their early twenties of the people that I worked with. We find that it's extremely, extremely uncommon to develop or to see any signs of truly diagnosed schizophrenia before that. You know before the late teens years. But in children with ADHD I guess it's important to really look at what are some of the characteristics associated with schizophrenia. What are some of the characteristics associated with ADHD. In diagnosing anybody with schizophrenia it is very important or ADHD for that matter, it is very important to rule out symptoms and some of the behavioral clusters that would mimic those disorders. But depression and high levels of anxiety can be seen to be irritability or some of the pre-existing conditions for schizophrenia are most ADHD. So when looking for signs of schizophrenia in children, we want to recognize that it is really not that prevalent and you rarely ever see it in children under the ages of five. Where in children with ADHD we see a lot of those symptoms, and the diagnosis is formed based on seeing symptoms of ADHD that are characteristic of ADHD before age seven. My name is John Bosworth, and we're looking a signs of schizophrenia in children with ADHD."
