Hello my name is Rebecca Herrick. I'm at Everything Peaceful in Wilmington, North Carolina and I am a shiatsu practitioner. Basically what shiatsu is is working with the body's meridians or energy channels that are like a highway system that run through our body. When we get a blockage in this highway it acts just like a traffic jam above the blockage you get a deficiency and below the blockage you get an excessiveness and whenever you have excess or deficiency you lose balance. One meridian flows into the next meridian and so therefore if you get a blockage in one meridian you get a blockage in the other meridian as well. So basically what a shiatsu treatment does it works to unbreak these blockages or these traffic jams to bring balance and wellbeing to the whole body. There are many different techniques that are used in order to do this but they all basically work to create the smooth flow of chi or body's life force or energy through these meridians in the body. So the shiatsu treatments are usually done on the floor on a mat or a padded surface with the practitioner moving around the client's body on the floor so as to be able to help people to distribute their weight evenly across the client's body in an easier way which makes shiatsu a great treatment to do at home or anywhere because you don't necessarily need special equipment in order to do it and those are some of the benefits of shiatsu.
