Hello you may have asked yourself the question why is diabetes continuing to increase. My name is Sonya Wade and I'm an Assistant Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner in the School of Nursing at Vanderbilt University and if you've asked yourself that question I wanted to tell you that the main reason diabetes continues to increase is due to overweight and obesity. The U.S. Census has reported in the last ten years that the number of Americans with obesity has continued to grow at an alarming rate. The other reason is because of physical inactivity. We have seen that even in schools that physical activity exercises and physical education programs have been cut because of budget constraints and so we have children that are not also getting the same physical activity that they have gotten in the past and along with the technical tools that children use now they spend a lot of time sitting instead of moving and so we really need to get America on the move and the other reason that you might see an increase in diabetes is because our older population continues to grow in numbers. With the baby boomers that have come in to the age of moving into that young older adult population we are seeing that they are presenting with more diabetes and for these reasons that's why we are seeing a tremendous increase in diabetes in the United States.
