Is Acai Berry a Good Weight Loss Supplement?

My name is Christine Marquette, and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness, and I've been asked: Is acai berry a good weight loss supplement? Unfortunately, there haven't been a lot of studies with acai berry to see if it really does help with weight loss. At this point, we know that the berry itself does have a lot of antioxidants. It does have the potential to have a lot of health properties to it -- very similar to other berries. There's that potential that it could help in preventing different types of cancer. It may help with heart health, heart disease, cholesterol -- those types of things. But in regards to weight loss, there haven't been any studies to show that it does anything to boost metabolism or to enhance the reduction of body fat or to decrease appetite or anything like that. So at this point, there haven't been any human studies with acai berry, so for that reason, I cannot say whether or not it actually is a good weight loss supplement. More than likely, it's...it won't harm you but it may not necessarily enhance your weight loss. So for that reason, if you want to try acai berry, you're probably better off trying the actual berry itself or the juice, rather than buying a supplement. With a supplement, again, it's going to be basically an extract. You don't know exactly what level that you're getting from the...from the food itself. So acai berry, as a weight loss supplement, the jury is still out. It may or may not help. There really aren't any studies to prove that it does, but by that same token, there aren't any negative side effects associated with it.
