My name is Christine Marquette, and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness, and I've been asked: Do leptin supplements work for weight loss? Now, this is kind of a tricky question. Leptin is fairly new as far as the field of weight loss and hormones. Leptin is a type of hormone that was discovered a few years ago, and it has been known to be the hormone that actually signals to your brain that you're full. And there's controversy with it because in some of the studies that have been done in obese people, they found that they had lower levels of leptin, but when they were supplemented with leptin, they didn't necessarily lose weight. Another thing that's a bit of a controversy is that in people who have sleep apnea, they have very high levels of leptin, and when the apnea was corrected and they got better sleep, these levels of leptin actually went down. So they had lower levels of leptin than they had initially, but then they lost weight. So we don't really know. It seems, at this point, that leptin supplements may work for some people, but they might not work for others. It seems that the true thing that needs to be found out is how each person's individual body responds to a particular dose of leptin. So it sounds like leptin is really dose-dependent for the individual person in how their body responds to it. So right now, we can't say for certain that taking leptin supplements works. It appears that it may work for some people, but not in others for weight loss.
