"My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness and I am going to talk to you about the health benefits of honeydew. Honeydew melons are an excellent source of Vitamin C. They are very high in Vitamin C. They are also a very good source of potassium. Vitamin C is very very important for a variety of reasons. It is known as an antioxidant so it has that potential to be part of our arsenal in prevention of cancer. Potassium has also a lot of benefits. It is needed for fluid balance. A lot of people recognize potassium as being a factor in preventing muscle cramps so a lot of athletes will rely on potassium as well as plain old water and sodium to prevent cramping. So from that perspective it is definitely beneficial. As far as heart disease potassium is also a mineral that is associated with lowering blood pressure. So because honeydew is a good source of potassium it has that potential to help with lowering your blood pressure so honeydew in addition to having a lot of potassium in it, a lot of Vitamin C in it it also has a fair amount of Folate in it, that is a particular B vitamin and that particular vitamin is very beneficial in preventing birth defects so for women who are pregnant honeydew can be a very good choice because it will provide them a good amount of Folate, a lot of Vitamin C, a lot of potassium and often times women have issues with blood pressure, with cramping and again in prevention of birth defects, having that Folate is very important and honeydew has numerous health benefits whether you are pregnant or not whether you have high blood pressure or not, it's a very good healthy choice."
