My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a registered and licensed dietitian with Marquette Nutrition and Fitness and I'm going to talk to you about aspartame side effects studies. Recently there was actually a very large review about 500 different studies on aspartame and there was a panel of eight experts in various fields of toxicology who reviewed studies that have been done all around the world and what they found in these studies is that there really hasn't been any evidence of serious side effects regarding aspartame. Most of the studies looked at various issues, they looked at cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's, all sorts of different diseases to see if there was any relationship between aspartame and these particular diseases. One are of concern was that there had been a study done in 2005 in Italy that did show an increase in risk of cancer in female rats, specifically lymphoma and leukemia. Now this is the only study out of hundreds that showed any relationship between aspartame and cancer so when they reviewed that study as well they found that the methods weren't consistent with some of the other studies in how this was actually performed in the sense that in most animal studies when the animals are fed a certain dose of aspartame they are then basically euthanized and then the tissue looked at whereas these rats were actually allowed to live until they died naturally. So in fact these rats actually lived longer than the controlled rats so that in itself even there was an incidence of cancer the rats lived much longer even though they were given high doses of aspartame. So as far as the most recent information regarding aspartame and side effects the majority of the studies show that it is safe. It doesn't increase the incidence of any type of cancer or diabetes or Parkinson's or MS or a variety of other conditions.
