"Hey, my name's Brian Medeiros. I'm a saxophone teacher, and I just want to show you a couple of different kinds of woodwind instruments. And my favorite, of course, is the saxophone. This is an alto saxophone. It's a woodwind instrument. A woodwind instrument describes the type of instrument that it is. There's, in a orchestra or a band there's woodwind instruments, brass and strings and percussion. Woodwinds being saxophone. Uses a reed, vibrates when you blow through it. Makes a sound. Great sounding instrument. This is a flute. It's also a woodwind instrument, however, it does not use a reed. It's still called a woodwind instrument, and, basically, you blow across the hole, sound comes out similar to the saxophone. The more keys that you hold down, the longer the instrument actually gets, in effect, and the lower the notes are. So, if you notice, the keys are kind of in a similar place to the saxophone, of course it's shaped differently, but the fingerings are pretty similar. There's the flute. And last on my list of woodwind instruments here is the clarinet. Clarinet's made of plastic now. They used to make 'em out of wood. It's also a woodwind instrument. Uses a reed to vibrate and create a sound. Fingering's real similar to the saxophone. This is probably more similar to a recorder that you would see, you know, a beginner woodwind player may grab a recorder before they spend the money on a actual woodwind instrument like a flute, clarinet or saxophone. Other instruments, woodwind instruments, would include an oboe, which is similar to the clarinet, except there's a double reed on it. That's a little bit harder to play. And, there you have it. There's three different types of woodwind instruments, and they make up, basically, marching bands, school bands, jazz bands. That's your woodwind instruments."
