"I'm Roger Groh and we're here today to talk about scams in the credit counseling services area. There are legal requirements in some states and municipalities for who might call themselves credit counselors but we all know that you can advertise on line, you can advertise in the Yellow Pages, you can advertise on Craig's List and identify yourself as a credit counselor and say that you will help people solve their problems. Well many of them are fake. They will charge you an upfront fee and do nothing, like all of these other on line scams that you have seen in the past. If it seems too good to be true it probably is so be very careful. How do you check? Well chances are if they work in a law firm, a well known large law firm then they are probably legitimate. If they are a large company in your community you can go on one of the, you can go on Craig's List and Google them and see what other people have said about them, who do they work for and what was their experience and last you can always ask for referrals from that company, who have you worked for in the past and can I talk to them and go talk to ten, call them on the phone and be really sure of the fact that once you have paid money that they are going to go to work for you because a big percent, maybe 90% of the ads that you see for credit counseling services are fake. They're scams, don't be fooled, do your homework. Of the companies that you might consider using in credit counseling, one of them might be Credit Counseling Services. You can Google them. They're not profit, they have been around for 50 years and they're a good place to start. I'm Roger Groh."
