Series Summary

Alcohol has been a cultural staple of the West for thousands of years. As many as 6,500 thousand years ago, wine was a large part of Greek culture and religion. Beer is probably equally as old, being brewed by royalty and peasants since the birth of European civilization. Monasteries were early producers and distributors of beer during the Dark Ages. By the 8th and 9th centuries, Muslim alchemists had produced distilled alcohols and “spirits” that became popular beverages. The American tradition of alcohol is centered on the bar, known in England and English-speaking countries as a Public House, or pub. Descendants of the rowdy mead halls celebrated in Beowulf, the bar is a focal point of social life and the various mating rituals of American adults. In this free video series on alcohol, a professional bartender explains different liquor and mixed drinks. Learn all about whiskey, bourbon, Scotch whiskey and vodka. Get information on picking the best whiskey or bourbon and learn about what vodka is made from. Find out how to make different mixed drinks and how to pick a good mixer, all with information from these free videos.

"Okay, aphrodisiac drinks. There are, you know, countless experts who will tell you all sorts of different things about aphrodisiacs; things that are, things that aren't, and there will be plenty of other people who agree and disagree. I think it's pretty universally understood that chocolate is an aphrodisiac and there are lots of drinks you can make if you have a fine chocolate liqueur, such as Godiva. You can make some good martinis with that or just serve it straight up. Pineapples are supposed to be an aphrodisiac, so I suppose using pineapple juice as a mixer with anything like rum or vodka, you know, that might do the trick. And licorice, fennel, things like that are also supposed to be an aphrodisiac, so I suppose you could bust out the the Sambuca, or any anisette for that matter, chill it and do shots or something. There really aren't that many mixers for something like this. And wine, most experts will tell you, is also an aphrodisiac and wine, relatively cheap, goes great with a nice dinner. And I've also heard that Benedictine, which is a liquor made by, originally made by monks will act as an aphrodisiac so you could get some B&B; Benedictine isn't that popular, and who knows why monks would need an aphrodisiac."
