"I'm Mike Quinn. I've been an entomologist for twenty years. And we're here at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin Texas. Talking about how to raise a praying mantis. Basically you can keep the critter in a small cage and put in insects in there. They feed on a wide variety of insects. Easy insect to keep along side to provide food for the praying mantis are crickets, you can, and the female will eat as many as a dozen or more crickets in a day. But she doesn't need that many to just maintain normal weight. She'll do that when she's building up to lay eggs. And if the female is well fed, if you have a male and female, they won't eat each other. But in general it's best to keep the praying mantis in separate small containers so they don't get tempted to prey on each other. So those are some of the ways to rear and raise praying mantises."
