I'm Mike Quinn and I have been an entomologist for 20 years and we are here at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center talking about how to hatch a praying mantis. Basically the egg case is called an ootheca and the young of the praying mantis naturally emerge from that but if you want to protect it you can keep it in a screened in enclosure so that parasites and predators don't get to it and you want a couple of other things to be aware of is to keep the temperature like the outdoor ambient temperature so you can keep it in a garage situation and you might want to keep the humidity up. If you have it indoors sometimes the air can dry it out and so if you do have it indoors you can spritz it with a mister and so those are ways to help a praying mantis in a case hatch.
