Series Summary

Budapest, Hungary is often considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, the “Paris of the East,” becoming for the last decades a political, cultural, and economic hub. Beginning as a Celtic settlement in the first century BCE, the Romans took over the city at the beginning of the Christian era and held it long into the reign of the Eastern Empire. Soon, however, wave after wave of barbarian tribe claimed the town and added their own marks to the rich culture that was growing. The Ottomans ruled Budapest before Mongol invasions and French occupation. The cities of Buda and Pest that would become Budapest in 1873 were even key sights during the Renaissance that spread through Northern Italy and Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many other nations controlled the cities before Hungary claimed sovereignty in 1918.
