on 10/21/2009 To be fair she does say that the first cage is only suitable for transport and that the middle cage is only big enough for one rat. These comments are both true however a rat should only be kept on it's own when she has babies or when a rat is ill or injured and needs to be kept alone during recovery. The problem I have with this video is the 'condo' she shows. This cage is tiny and not big enough for rats. Not only that but there are next to no toys, houses, gnaws, ropes etc to stimulate a rat. They are intelligent animals as the vast majority of rat owners know and need space and a fun cage to live in! Check out my website www.ratandspoon.com where there is some sound advice on rat cages :)

on 2/17/2009 I really do hope that people do not follow the advice given in these videos.
What a terrible disservice to the rat community.

on 8/2/2008 This is a pathetic video about setting up a rat cage, none of these rat cages are appropriate for rats. Rats need 2 square feet of cage space per rat. If you want a good rat cage try www.martinscages.com
The woman doing the video was dressed very poorly for a public video and that awful smacking sound she makes with mouth on every video is a huge turn off. I can make you some much better rat videos. There is not enough info provided like the proper bedding for rats - no pine or cedar. That condo of all cages she is talking about is a worthless two small cage. Rats need levels in their cages because they like to climb and be up high. Rats need free range time daily out of the cage. I could go on and on, but I urge expertvillage.com to remove all the videos on rat care this woman has made.

I am sorry to have to say these rat videos are all worthless and should be removed from this website immediately.
Whoever this Laura Fitzgerald is she is not a rat expert and these videos suggest she has no idea how to properly care for a rat. In addition to a proper size rat cage, rats need hammocks, hidey houses, things to climb on, a water bottle, food bowl, ropes, etc. All 3 cages this woman shows are all too small for even one rat. The last cage with the green base is a ferret kingdom cage that is missing the 3 shelves and ramps, the cage isn't even complete and she's showing it to the public.
Please expertvillage.com take down these rat videos immediately and if you want CORRECT rat care info look into the rat expert Debbie Ducommn's website at www.ratfanclub.org. The link to these videos is circulating on several rat yahoo groups with amazing speed and they are considered a joke.

"Hi, I'm Laura Fitzgerald and on behalf of Expert Village, I would like to talk to you today about the care and maintenance of your pet rat. Today I am going to talk to you about choosing your rat's home, and in front of me I have three cages. The first cage I am going to show you is not a simple cage for a long term care for your pet rat. This cage is perfect for a carry cage, if you ever have to take your rat to the vet or an overnight stay at a friends house. The great thing about this cage is that it is light weight, easy to carry, easy to maintain. It's easy to take apart and clean and put back together. I highly recommend this type of cage for travel cage for your rat for an overnight stay. The second cage I am going to show you is suitable for one rat. It's the perfect cage to keep one rat or as you can see my mommy rat and her babies. It has a very large door so that you can reach in and get to your rat easily or your rat can get out. It can accommodate two water bowls, food dish, hide box, and it makes it suitable for your rat to get in and out. This cage is light weight and easy to clean. The third cage I am going to show you today is the condo of cages for rats. It is suitable for two or more rats and it is also light and easy to clean and take apart. The best thing about this cage is that it has two doors, the top door and second door, which makes it a lot easier to reach in at different levels and get your rat. As you can see they like it a lot. With this cage you can have many different levels to give your rat roaming room. You can hang toys, you can have many different hide boxes, here I have a homemade hide box and a hidden hid box, toys, and you can have multiple food dishes and water bowls. "
