"The next consideration you need to make for your pet portrait painting, is what size of canvas you want to do today. And, this can be helped by actually having your photograph in mind. This is going to be your subject photograph. Basically, it's going to be what we're painting today, with some modifications, as you'll see. Now, if you have that photograph; if you want to make this life size, this isn't going to be that big of a canvas, now is it? Of course, if you want to blow up the picture, like that, you're going to need a bigger canvas. In general, I try to closely match picture size with canvas size. At least in the sense of having one picture or photograph, that's going to be around the same size as the canvas on which I'm going to paint it. So, this picture here, is right around sixteen by twenty inches. That's the canvas I'm going to be using today. Now, that does not mean, that I cannot have some smaller reference points, you know. Tape them up on the wall. I want to be close by where I can see them. That's fine too. Actually, the more representations of this, in my line of vision for me, the better, so long as I'm not getting confused. But before you start painting, make sure you cover the decision: what type of picture do you want to paint, how big is it going to be, and making sure you have an appropriate, corresponding, canvas size."
