"Welcome to Expert Village, my name is Wayne Petersen and I direct the Massachusetts Audubon Society, Important Bird Area Program in Massachusetts. Today we're here at the Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary in Marshfield, Massachusetts and we're going to be talking about the equipment needed to get one started in birding. One of the really neat things about birding is something that you can engage in without a huge outlay in equipment. A few basic purchases will get you started and I have to say that probably among the things that are most useful, first of all the binoculars and we'll talk more about binoculars in a few minutes, there's all manner in price range and magnification and considerations, but at least optics allow you to see birds closer and that can be really important. Secondly is what are we looking at? Which brings to mind obviously the need for field guides and again we'll talk more about the tremendous assortment of field guides that are available and how they can be best applied to helping you recognize some of the many bird species that you may see. And then finally I would encourage all beginning birders to take advantage of a notebook, a place where they can write down their observations, take notes on what they see, behavioral information and the names of some of the birds that they recognize."
