Types of 19th Century Chairs: Late Sheraton Hitchcock

"So we're going to talk a little bit about 19th century late Sheraton painted Hitchcock style chair. We have an example here for you. It has that same rabbit ear thumbback to it. It has this design across the front which you can find it in the straight pieces of across without this extra detail in it. You'll find three spindles across the top here with one spindle. Here it's real typical design but this one has a little bit more fancy design to it. You can see some of the detail painting on it with the gold tones with the fruit and flower design with a little swirls almost vine like swirls on it. This is really typical and on the sides here you can see it's pretty fancy with the ribbons. The ribbons hanging down with the typical tassel on here. I'm not sure if you can see that with the cut out design on the bottom the rungs have the detail with almost like bamboo like painted. On either sides of the arm the outside of the arms. You see the detail painted in here. There's a lot of detail painted in these chairs with the rush seat here on the center. And on the outside you can see the way the Windsor is formed on the seat where it's turned. It's a really thin turning of wood. So this is not unusual to find damaged. If you can see here, it's really thin. When you get over the years a lot of wear on it, these pieces will split and break off. So this one actually is in pretty good condition. The paint's in pretty good condition. Also you can see really typical turnings on the legs. These columns on the sides really typical and if you look at the front of the chair you can see the diamond cut out with more designs and more color. This is a really nice example with the front. You can also see they paid attention to the detail here with the stenciling and the color also on the inside. So this is a pretty nice example of a painted 19th century Sheraton chair. This is something you might want to look for if you're going to look for this style. There's a lot of notes to take into account here. On these corner edges that tie the chair together, to the rung (this here) which stabilizes the chair, a lot of times this will be damaged. When you find these, they will be damage on the rush seat also. But these are in tact and there's some paint loose but they're all in tact. That's inevitable and that's going to happen your going to have some paint loose. But overall in rating this chair, it's in pretty good condition with a little color problems here and there. But, this is probably one of the better chairs to look for when you're looking for paint decoration. One example of 19th century Sheraton."
