Series Summary

Chess is a game of strategy and logical deduction, pitting two minds against each other in a head-to-head (or microprocessor) battle of wits, skill, and bombast. Both children and adults alike enjoy the challenge of a chess match; and games are played anywhere, from living rooms and park benches to the palaces and convention halls of the world. Though chess has taken on many forms over the years, today's game usually involves dark and light teams of pieces (rooks, knights, bishops, kings, queens, and pawns) on a similarly-shaded board. As a recent development, chess has entered the digital age, and individual matches and tournaments are played online and via email. This new forum for gameplay has only served to intensify the massive appeal that chess already exerts.

In this free video clip series, our expert will explain the basic rules of the game of chess, explaining some of the moves and techniques used when playing the game. Get tips on how to setup a chess board, how to capture with each piece, how to use the queen, and strategies for winning using the rook. Watching these videos will leave you a little better prepared for your next chess match…so you should begin practicing saying these two words: “check” and “mate.”

So the total number of squares that we find in a chess board is 64. There 64 squares are again divided into white and dark squares. The object in chess it to check mate your opponent king. Check mate or just mate is often when the king is attacked and the king can not escape a capture on the next move. "
