"We're going to talk a little bit about punk hairstyles. Now the most famous of the punk hairstyles is obviously the Mohawk which would involve moussing, super gluing, whatever, your hair into big spikes that would extend from the head. That's just one style. The idea of punk hair is for it to be in your face. It emerged in the 70s and 80s when the popular hairstyle involved looking very soft and groomed and flowing and so it wanted to contrast with that. So the Mohawk is one example any sort of bigger, dirty, matted hair the opposite of what you might see in a shampoo commercial. It's supposed to be a reflection of rejecting that sort of materialism or consumerism. Punk in a lot of ways is about rejecting consumerism which became increasingly more mainstream in the 70s and 80s with the Regan era. And so punk was a reaction to that, a rejection of that sort of thing. In addition a lot of punks choose to completely shave their heads. There's a hairstyle called the Chelsey for girls which is a shaved head and then just sort of two pieces of bangs in the front. There are lots of things that you can do with your hair, but the idea is for it to read big and messy and not pretty. I really can't overstate that. I said it about the makeup and I'm going to say it about the hair. It's not supposed to look nice."
