Series Summary

Men and women have been coloring their hair since the beginning of time using chemicals, plants and pigments. In recent times, men and women dye their hair a variety of colors including everything from blonde to blue. Hair dye is made up of pigments (color) or bleaches. Depending on whether you are adding color to your hair or taking color away, the process of dying your hair can be lengthy and sometimes painful. Highlights and lowlights are accent colors that are added to specific sections of hair, as opposed to an “all-over” color that is applied to all the hair on the head.

In this series of expert videos, you will learn more about coloring or dying hair. Watch as our expert explains the steps for preparing the hair for acceptance of the color or bleach. Also get tips on preparing the dye or hair color. Learn how to apply color or highlights to your hair. Get “do-it-yourself” tips from our hair color expert. Our expert hair stylist gives tips on adding highlights to the hair for both women and men. Learn how to use foils when applying highlights or hair color. "Hi, my name is Dawn Shannon owner of Intuition Salon and Spa, I am also a hair stylist and you can visit us on the web at www.intuitionsalonandspa.com. Today we are going to go over a couple of different coloring techniques and also how to pick the correct colors for your customers. We have a variety of colors here and also I have a whole book here. the first thing that you want to do is look at your client and see what color of skin they have and what style they wear their hair in. second thing you want to do is see what colors look good against their skin. For instance, she is olive tone so we know that a really warm red does not go. The best thing to do is actually put the colors up to their skin and next to their eye and it is good indicator as to what is going to look best on them. Even outside of all of the technical things like discovering what their color tone is, if you actually just put the color up next to their skin, you can see and they can also see too what is going to look the best on them. Now she would like, in our previous discussion, she would like to overall be lighter, she wants to work towards being all over blond. So in looking at her skin we know that for instance, a neutral blond is not the best color for her, but if you put a really light blond up against her skin, you see that it works really well. So what we are going to do is we are going to go through and we are going to lighten her up around her face. We are going to use a second blond that is more neutral to cut the contrast because she wants it to look just a little bit more natural, not totally natural but a little bit more natural. And we are going to do that by applying foils. And when we are done putting the highlights in, we are going to go through and lighten up the rest of her hair just a little bit. "
