Matching Striped Ties with Shirts

"Oh Hi, I'm Douglas Willott, on behalf of Expert Village. Today we're going to talk about coordinating your shirt with your tie. If you have a shirt with a non-traditional look to it or some sort of non-traditional pattern; something that's not just a base color or a stripe is what I'm referring to non-traditional. There are some tips for coordinating your ties. Now of course, very popular now, is the small checkered shirt. You'll see those often worn by business men. The trick is not to have a checkered tie with the same size checkers on it. You can, of course, do a striped tie or a basic tie to go with that, that you would otherwise wear, using the same technique you did for the striped tie, where you step away; what color do you see? Coordinate based on that color. You can do a nice basic contrast or you can do a nice connector color between the two. Let's take a shirt with a nice diagonal stripe. There's a trick to this; a lot of striped ties have diagonal stripes on them as well. As you can see, this tie kind of gets lost on this shirt, because the stripes are going the same. Go ahead and try to avoid that. I know it does not look offensive, but at the same time, it is a little bland. Go ahead and see if you can find a tie with some sort of straight down pattern if you have a diagonal stripe; maybe either just a basic color or maybe a checkered tie that could go down and look good on a shirt like this. For instance, the basic black there goes down and stands out very nice. On the other end of things, we have a blue right here that's going to really good, with very small dots upon it."
